2019 REPORTS
SALMONID HABITAT RESTORATION -
MacLeod’s Settlement Installation Project
Final Report 2019
This year’s project consisted of restoring over 800 meters of salmonid habitat on the Southwest Mabou River, located in the Mabou Harbour Watershed. The Southwest Mabou River is a straight, over-widened channel with an average width of 16-18 meters. The width of the river is one of the main concerns and creates other habitat issues such as shallow water with warmer temperatures; lack of tree cover to provide shaded areas for fish; and a defined meandering pattern which can create pooling areas, also great for fish habitat.
With the combination of a straight, widened river with shallow waters and poor tree cover, our goal was to improve fish habitat by installing large deflectors and preventing bank erosion by stabilizing the bank with hand rock. The deflectors installed were braced in with 6x3 meter logs and were double tiered. Each deflector alternated sides of the river and were filled with rock out of the substrate and were tapered up into the bank height.
