Salmon foundation issues money to two Cape Breton groups

The Cheticamp River Salmon Association received $9,500, while the Inverness South Anglers Association was given $5,000.

“This marks the 10th anniversary of the ASCF providing funding in the interests of Atlantic salmon conservation, so it is especially satisfying to see that our grants continue to help this greatest of fighting fish overcome the considerable challenges it faces,” said Stephen Chase, executive director of foundation.

Other associations to receive money in Nova Scotia include the St. Mary’s River Association ($25,000), Nova Scotia Salmon Association ($20,000), Dalhousie University ($15,000 for 2017, part of three-year project valued at $45,000), Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation ($15,000), Pictou County Rivers Association ($7,500) and Sackville Rivers Association ($5,000).

“The applications we receive each year are always impressive and 2017’s round was no exception. More than 90 proposals were received for this year of which 71 were approved,” said Chase.

The foundation supports conservation efforts for wild Atlantic salmon in eastern Canada in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

It is a volunteer, non-profit, charitable organization established with the goal of helping to achieve healthy and sustainable wild Atlantic salmon stocks in Atlantic Canada and Quebec.
